Pokemon Snap (N64)

Have you ever wondered what Pokemon would be like, in 3D? I did too. Now it's finally here, Pokemon Snap for Nintendo 64! Professor Oak sends Todd some letter to make him come to Pokemon Island to snap pictures for his Pokemon Report. The story really has no point, but who cares! The game is fun!

The title screen graphics are totally disappointing. They remind me of a Super Nintendo game. But you have to understand, this game takes after the anime so it has to look... well... animeish. Anyway, when you start the game you are taken to Professor Oak's lab. Prof. Oak looks Exactly like in the anime so many people that watch the show will totally recognize him. All of the Pokemon look awesome, they look exactly how I expected. They look just like the anime except in 3D, of course.

The music is actually really good. They all fit the levels perfectly. The level at the beach gives you that tropical feeling. I turn the volume right up because I like the music in it a lot. The tunnel music is really cool, it gives you that creepy abandoned feeling. The volcano music is awesome it totally fits the level. The river music is fine. The cave music is enchanting and you'll love it. Etc. etc. etc. overall the music is great.

This is where the game really stinks. It is too easy to snap pictures of all 63 Pokemon. Everybody I know including me has beat it in an hour or a bit longer. I expected one game of Pokemon Snap to last me at least a week. There's 151 Pokemon but they only stuck in 63 what's with that? That is a rather large disappointment. But it's pretty hard to get a score over 4000 points for each Pokemon so that adds to the challenge.

Despite it's short-length this game is one of the most fun games to hit the Nintendo 64. Any die-hard Pokemon fan will keep coming back to the game. Also you can get your favorite photos and print them onto stickers at Blockbuster. If you want, you can go to levels and take hilarious photos of Pokemon and stick them in your Pokemon Album! My favorite picture is one of Jigglypuff being hit by the pesterball on-stage, it's totally freaked out!

And some Pokemon like Squirtle, you got to hit Mankey with it in the Valley level but usually I end up missing it so I get really upset. Some Pokemon it is literally impossible to get a decent picture of like Goldeen and Dratini. And when you finally get a good picture Prof. Oak will probably give you a bad mark so it gets you really upset!!!

Most gamers will not want to play this game again. You will just want to try the game and get pictures of all 63 Pokemon then when you've done it, you've done it and that's it. Nothing new happens after. I really did expected a large adventure game, with dozens of levels and all 151 Pokemon hiding away and a big challenge to find them all. Instead we end up with some game with seven levels and only 63 Pokemon, but that's still not enough to even make the average Pokefreak happy.

This is a game everybody should try, whether you're a Pokefreak or not. It is a totally unique, fresh new kind of game. It will quench any gamer's need for a brand new kind of game instead of the usual shoot 'em ups. But if you're expecting a long adventure game, do not buy this game. You will be disappointed. This game is fun, and there are lots of secrets. Any true Pokefreak will love this game. If you like taking pictures with the camera try this game out! Pokemon Snap is not the best game for Nintendo 64, it's just got to be the shortest adventure game. But rent it if you want, you may have a totally different opinion.

User Review
SOUND: 9/10
- The sounds are exactly like in the TV show you'll recognize them right away... Except for Metapod he didn't make that annoying "META-POD META-POD" sound. And Psyduck didn't go "PSY-YI-YI!!" he just went "AAHYA!". But all of the Pokemon's sounds besides those two are really great.

GRAPHICS: 8/10
- Snap looks okay, not amazing, but ok. I know I'm nagging a little but it's true, the intro could use some work on those trees. But all of the levels in the game have amazing graphics no doubt about that! Especially Gyarados and Charizard, when you see them you'll go "WOW!"

CONTROL: 7.5/10
- This game can get frustrating when you miss a great shot, or whatever. Especially with that elusive Mew. If you aren't quick it will disappear.

REPLAY VALUE: 6/10
- This game is totally not the game you will want to buy. But this should be on your must-rent list.

FUN: 9/10
- Despite it's short-length this game is one of the most fun games to hit the Nintendo 64.

OVERALL: 7.9/10
