After writing the 3D platformer rulebook back in 1996 with Super Mario 64, Nintendo has had one hell of a mountain to climb to top that classic title. Super Mario Sunshine came close, but even the interesting new FLUDD mechanic and tropical setting couldn't disguise the fact that it was really just a remix of Super Mario 64, complete with similar styles of challenges and many of the same drawbacks. It's a challenge familiar to developers around the world. How do you create a sequel in a hugely popular and iconic series that actually takes a significant step forward, without losing what made the series great in the first place?
This latest adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel puts mega-star Will Smith into the role of Robert Neville, once played by the venerable Charlton Heston in The Omega Man. Here, in I Am Legend, the Hollywood treatment of the source material shows much technical aplomb, as well as Smith's tenacious scientist. But, it feels too split in trying to convince intellectually while having the means to excite the senses.

The story goes like this: After seeing an advance print of the Ridley Scott heroin-trade epic American Gangster, Jay-Z found himself inspired. The movie details the story of the Vietnam-era Harlem kingpin Frank Lucas, and Jay saw so many parallels between Lucas's life and his own. Over the course of a few weeks, Jay recorded his own widescreen epic, a concept-album about the rise and fall of a gangster like Lucas, an imagined what-if trajectory for what might have happened to Jay if he'd never left the drug trade.
It makes for a good story and a great marketing coup. By attaching himself to a big-budget crime epic, Jay guaranteed himself cross-media presence and positioned himself to regain some of the grimy credibility he'd lost with 2006's Kingdom Come...
